HEAT topic resources 2021

Hooray! we’re back to doing our heat unit with a few minor changes. Let’s see if I can upload the ppp here! They’re rather large. No idea why I’ve large gaps. Originally these showed the pdf files and now I’ve no idea what has happened!

Conduction

NB if you want a copy of the Conduction ppp you’ll need to email me, as it has embedded video it is a whopping 484 MB! I’ve taken out the videos and its just 98MB

End of Topic Heat Notes- JAH

Thanks to Adam P for holding the camera as I did this demo. It shows so much Science in one large boiling tube! Convection, lack of conduction, state of matter, floating and sinking, density! Hope you like it.

The gauze is there only because the ice floats on the water and the ice needs to be at the bottom for the experiment to work.

These are a set of results from the Doll’s House. What happens at 20 000 s and what happens at 33,000s? State how the graph would be different if the house was well insulated? Why is the upstairs at a higher temperature? Try to describe the Physics behind each of the graphs.

Below are the resources for the HEAT topic that you’ll cover in S1 Physics. You might not be given all of the information by your teacher, but you can always use the additional materials to read around the subject, that’s what makes a successful learner, confident individual and responsible citizen.

Old Heat Notes These are old heat notes, from which the new resources were taken. They can be used to back-up your learning.

1.a SHOW FIRST S1 introduction (heat) If you’ve already done the ELECTRICITY topic this will be familiar for you. You can remind yourself about what the subject of physics is, in this document.

Homework HEAT  (homework) This gives the heat homework as a list and with your teacher you can add the dates which the homework is due.

Logic problems (homework) this document will give you advice on how to answer the logic problem which will be one of your homework pieces.

Heat Logic Problem (homework). This is a homework piece for you to tackle. Some of you might be given something a little simpler. It is good brain training food.

Heat Transfer wordsearch (homework). This might be given to you as an alternative to the Logic Problem.

Here are some ideas for investigations, but it would be much better if you devised your own experiments.

Here are a great set of results. Can you explain them. What happens at approx 33000 s? Why is upstairs at a higher temperature? What would a well insulated house graph look like?

Here are a set of revision cards for you to cut up and arrange in the right order. If you cut out the headings and first column as one piece it will save you lots of time and will be neater then cut the rest out as single boxes and match them with the correct row.

OK, so I am nice and have given you the answers. These are for you to check against not to cheat! Hope you got them all correct, if not go and check with your teacher.
